World Championship Wrestling
August 3, 1985
Tony Schiavone and David Crockett
-We have a quick clip of when Magnum TA lost the US Heavyweight Title to Tully Blanchard.
-Tony and David welcomes us to this week’s show and we’re reminded of Magnum TA’s rough stretch, losing the US Title and getting beat up by the Andersons. Among those in action, the World Tag Team Champions the Rock N Roll Express and the Championship Challenge continues today too. US Champion Tully Blanchard joins us to say there were no shenanigans in that match, and he’s the champ for a very long time. Tully reminds everyone that on August 19 in Las Vegas, the NWA board will be giving him a special award, and he wants Tony and David, the two best announcers in the business to be there.
Manny Fernandez defeats Mike Thor with the flying burrito at 4:06
The Ragin’ Bull opens our show today, and he still has that odd dye patch in his mullet. Manny’s a great wrestler, but as we’ve seen on shows the past few weeks a terrible promo cutter. Watching him in the ring is his strong suit, and he was a very efficient wrestler, with quick strong strikes like elbow shots and knee lifts. It seems like the format is that all these squashes have to average about 4 minutes each, with the occasional 8 or 9 minute match. He hits the flying forearm move exactly like Tito Santana was at this time, very fluid and precise. A nice clean win for the Ragin’ Bull.
-At the table with the always entertaining Jim Cornette, who says he’s been talking all over the country about what happened to Magnum TA. Cornette says he looked like he shaved with a weedeater. He says the Sawyer brothers keep talking trash about his Midnight Express, but when it comes to the ring they run scared. Cornette says the Sawyers were taught a lesson once before, and they will be taught a lesson again, because its easier to jump on the Midnight Express, then it is to jump off.
-Back from break with the World TV Champion Dusty Rhodes, without Baby Doll. He says he’s taking advantage of the last few days with her by still making a lady. He runs down the Andersons about what they did to Magnum TA, and that a hiney kicking is coming soon. Yes, Dusty actually said “hiney”. He also warns that he’s on Ric Flair’s trail for a World Title shot. Well who isn’t?
Terry Taylor defeats El Geeko with the flying forearm at 4:06
El Geeko looks like The Missing Link without facepaint and muscles. This match is quite a bit longer than Taylor’s sub-minute squash last week but it’s an effective squash nonetheless. Tony and David talk about Taylor’s run-in with Black Bart and they both feel the National Heavyweight Champion will look for vengeance. Typical squash with the same finisher and duration as our last match.
-Back from break and we’re reminded tonight’s title match in the Superstation Championship Series will be the US Tag Team Champions: Wahoo McDaniel and Billy Jack Haynes defending the titles against Ravishing Rick Rude (spelled Rudd for the second week in a row) and Jack Hart. We’re joined by “America’s Team”, Dusty Rhodes and Magnum TA, who says the scars on his head from the Andersons have healed, but the ones inside haven’t. The Andersons tried to take what Magnum loves most: His career. As for Tully Blanchard, Magnum doesn’t care about Baby Doll, he cares about taking Tully’s other possession: The US Heavyweight Title. He will take it back, and no one will stop him. Dusty says “It’s Risky Business”, whatever that means.
The Russians defeat Jimmy Backland and Steve Blackmon when Nikita Koloff pins Backland with the Russian Sickle at 3:52
This week Krusher Krushchev joins Ivan & Nikita Koloff for their match. This Jimmy Backland is the one that would eventually become Jimmy Del Ray in the Heavenly Bodies. Ivan and Nikita wrestles the same match every week: Ivan does a lot of the setup grunt work, Nikita gets tagged in to hit one or two big power moves, tag back to Ivan for more setup moves, and Nikita finishes with the sickle. Their squashes are fun to watch because like The Road Warriors, they annihilate their opponents, not just wear them down with armbars and headlocks.
-Back from break, and now its time to pay attention, because The Champ is here. The WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION Ric Flair is with us, and he says he says Dusty Rhodes is calling Slick Ric’s name, so Dusty should just put his name on the dotted line and let’s dance. He also tells Magnum TA that he looks like a naked fool without a title, and that the Andersons did what they did to him because they are men. Magnum, if you can’t hang with the big boys, find something else to do. Ric also mentions Nikita Koloff, because there is a date with destiny between these two. He finishes by saying he’s heading back to Honolulu with his friend Dick Wood, to line up all the girls in Waikiki. He says you have now all been captivated by the greatest wrestler alive today. WHOOOO! I concur.
Italian Stallion defeats Kent Glover with a Samoan Drop at 4:56
So we go from an awesome promo from the greatest wrestler alive, to this snorefest. I don’t know if he was grooming Stallion for anything, but he had zero charisma and a thimble of ability. He’ll forever be known as the guy who got Matt & Jeff Hardy into the WWF in the mid-90’s. The crowd seemed bored also.
-Back to US Champion Tully Blanchard, who hates when people want to blemish his win over Magnum TA, and we go back to that match where a woman dressed as a female police officer handed Tully a roll of some coin, and he knocked Magnum cold, and took his title. We believe it was Baby Doll, but we’re not sure. Jim Crockett then joins us, and Tully butters him up. Crockett says next week for the Superstation Championship Challenge, Tully Blanchard will defend the US Title against Terry Taylor.
-Back from break and Baby Doll comes out to apologize for being late, but tells everyone to go to Hawaii as it’s a great vacation spot. Dusty comes out to yell at her for talking by herself on camera, and calls her a jezebel. That’s 3 Dusty appearances in the first 4 segments. Way too much Dream for me.
World Tag Team Champions The Rock n Roll Express defeat Lee Ramsey & Randy Barber when Robert Gibson pins Lee Ramsey after the double drop kick at 2:52
After a sluggish couple of matches the World Tag Champs energize the crowd with a quick win over a couple of stiffs. I try to figure out as I watch the Rock n Roll Express every week who the better wrestler of the pair was. Ricky Morton was definitely better looking, but I think Robert Gibson was the more polished wrestler. He gets the pin after their customary finisher.
-At the table and Tony with the Koloffs, and Nikita babbles something about Ric Flair getting lucky about keeping his World Title twice in matches with him, but Flair still holds the gold. Ivan says the day will come when the Kremlin will rejoice and Nikita will be World Champion, and vanquish the arrogant Flair.
Wahoo McDaniel and Billy Jack Haynes defeat Southern Heavyweight Champion Rick Rude and Florida Heavyweight Champion Jack Hart to retain US Tag Team Titles when Haynes pins Hart with a roll-up at 7:52
So I guess that’s how Rick Rude was spelling his last name at the time, as I keep thinking it was a typo. Percy Pringle was managing the team, as I believe he was managing Rude in Georgia or Memphis. Vince McMahon must have started Billy Jack Haynes on the yellow and green Oregon tights, as here he’s got black tights with “Oregon” on the back and white boots. The crowd gets excited for any title match, and going in this one did seem wide open, as all four men had credibility to be US Tag Champs. Percy looks pretty svelt (well svelt for Percy) at this time, as its evident he really packs the pounds on by the time he debuts as Paul Bearer in the WWF by late-1990. The 24/7 “Terri-Stories” graphic says Rude was the last recognized World Class Heavyweight Champion in 1985, which is clearly wrong since the USWA didn’t take over World Class till 1989. Jack Hart looks like Barry Horowitz, but I don’t think its him. A very exciting match that the crowd was all over for.
-At the interview table with the Sawyer brothers, Brett tries to talk but Buzz cuts him and says Jim Cornette is the class clown who gets his ass kicked by the jocks. Cornette will pay the price for messing with family. Sawyer’s tired of talking, and he wants the Midnight Express in the ring to settle things once and for all. Brett should just not talk, he has no charisma and sounds like a meathead.
-Back from break and a third interview with the US Champion Tully Blanchard, who says when you carry the US Title, you have to defend it against everyone. Tully has next week’s match with Terry Taylor, plus contracted matches with Dick Slater and Manny Fernandez. As for Magnum, he better watch out, because the Andersons have no problem finishing the job of America’s Team. The exciting thing is next week Baby Doll will be back.
-Tully leaves and Jim Cornette returns, and he introduces his main charges for our next match.
The Midnight Express defeats Vernon Deaton and Mike Simani when Dennis Condrey pins Simani with a clothesline at 2:07
Bobby Eaton looks like he’s wearing ballet tights this week, and Dennis Condrey wears the bandanna around his neck. I’m not touching that with a ten-foot pole. Cornette is gold on the mike, slamming David Crockett’s suit while proclaiming his Midnight Express will become #1 contenders to the Rock & Roll Express’ World Tag Titles. The Express are solid heels in the ring, but they don’t have a bona fide finisher, as they do different things every week.
-Back from break with the US Tag Champs, Billy Jack Haynes and Wahoo McDaniel. Wahoo says Billy Jack is his favorite partner and Haynes talks about his name change, and mumbles something about his dad. Its funny how all the NWA’s belts look the same, just different colors.
Buddy Landel defeats Pablo Crenshaw with the Figure Four at 2:20
Just 7 months before the birth of the Four Horsemen, and JJ is managing the low-rent “Nature Boy”. I always like watching Landel wrestle though, as he has that cool spinning elbow drop that is very unique to only him. He continues to taunt the crowd by asking “Who’s the real Nature Boy?” We know the answer to that, and it ain’t this guy. Landel beats Crenshaw up for a while, then hits his spinning elbow, followed by the Figure Four to finish it off. We have a fresh crop of jobbers this week, as I’ve never seen this Pablo Crenshaw guy before either.
-Back from break with the National Tag Team Champions, the Minnesota Wrecking Crew. We replay the footage of the HEEL BEATDOWN the Andersons give to Magnum TA, and Arn Anderson says its simply two guys who gave an attitude adjustment. The name of this game isn’t wearing leather jackets and bandannas, its about winning. Ole says its all about winning and America’s Team has to realize they’re not the best, because they have no tag titles to share.
Bob Roop defeats Jason Walker with a shoulderbreaker at :42
Last week Roop was taken over mentally by Kevin Sullivan in a trance, and this week he takes out some stiff in less than a minute.
-Roop then heads to the table, who appreciates he and David Crockett complementing him on his amateur background. He feels he has a bad reputation, and over the next few weeks he’ll get rid of the headache he has and he’ll be a different wrestler. David and Tony wrap up by saying Tully will reunite with Baby Doll and defend the US Title against Terry Taylor next week.
